Semantic fields in Surat Al-Isra - (a study of semantic relationships and the effect of context)

Abstract

This study aims to identify the semantic fields in Surat Al-Isra by examining its lexical items and classifying them into interconnected semantic groups. It analyzes the semantic relationships among these fields, including antonymy, synonymy, hyponymy, meronymy (part–whole relation), and causation, while highlighting the role of Qur'anic context in shaping and directing meaning. The study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach based on tracing lexical items within their Qur'anic contexts and relating them to the overall semantic structure of the surah, with reference to classical Qur'anic exegesis. The findings reveal that Surat Al-Isra presents a coherent and integrated semantic system in which lexical items are carefully organized within their semantic fields rather than distributed randomly. This organization contributes to reinforcing the surah's central themes of establishing faith, guiding moral conduct, and promoting ethical values
