Abstract

This study examines the transformation that has occurred in the journey of Hajj between the past and the contemporary reality. The development of transportation, services, and organizational systems has greatly facilitated access to the Holy Sites and reduced the hardships of travel compared to earlier times. However, this material facilitation is often accompanied by a weaker reflection of the spiritual and educational objectives of Hajj on the pilgrim’s inner state and religious conduct.

The study explores the relationship between the contemporary ease of performing Hajj and the realization of its spiritual purposes, raising the question of whether the current level of comfort contradicts the meanings of trial, discipline, and spiritual striving inherent in the pilgrimage. It also examines whether the diminished spiritual impact of Hajj is related to these conveniences or rather to other factors such as insufficient spiritual preparation and limited devotional education.

The study concludes that the facilitation of means does not contradict the objectives of Islamic law, which are founded on the principle of removing hardship. Rather, the realization of the spiritual purposes of Hajj depends primarily on the pilgrim’s awareness and conscious reflection on the meanings of worship. It also highlights the importance of strengthening educational and awareness programs that help pilgrims combine the ease of modern means with the full realization of the spiritual objectives of Hajj.
