The Songhai Kingdom is considered one of the greatest kingdoms that flourished in West Africa during the 15th and 16th centuries AD. It inherited the legacy of both the Ghana and Mali kingdoms. This kingdom was distinguished by a sophisticated political system that combined military power with an organized centralized administration, making it a remarkable model of the medieval African state.
The governing system of Songhai, with its sovereign and administrative features, contributed to consolidating the concept of the state in West Africa. It established a clear foundation for authority, legislation, and the organization of the relationship between the ruler and the ruled, in addition to developing effective administrative institutions that helped achieve stability and prosperity. This research aims to examine the nature of the political system in the Songhai Kingdom and analyze its role in building the medieval African state through a comparison of governance and administrative systems that emerged during that period.
